Project: Former Ancoats Dispensary, Manchester
Overview
The Grade II listed Dispensary opened in 1874 to provide healthcare for the local community. It served the area for over a century before closing in 1989.
Developers proposed redevelopment in the 2000s, but the plans fell through. Demolition proposals followed and triggered significant public opposition. In response, local stakeholders formed The Ancoats Dispensary Trust.
The Council took ownership of the building in 2018. In 2021, it partnered with Great Places to bring forward redevelopment proposals. The scheme will deliver 39 new affordable homes.
The design team retained the Grade II listed façades to preserve the building’s historic character. The works also included reconstruction of the tower and new-build elements to the rear.
Scope of Work
WLG were appointed the MEP contractor, working with Eric Wright Construction, and carried out the full design and installation of MEP works.
WLG maintained a pro-active and progressive approach to align to the complex nature of this Grade II Listed building.
We are extremely proud to have been given the opportunity to complete this unique and challenging project.
